Buying or selling shares, bonds and funds
Since 3 January 2018, a bank or broker cannot execute orders for a company without a LEI. This applies to any portfolio in the company’s name, however small.
Search any entity by name, NIF (Portuguese tax number) or LEI and see straight away whether it has a LEI, whether it is active and when it renews. If it does not have one yet, we handle the request for you.

The LEI (Legal Entity Identifier) is a unique code, defined by ISO 17442, that identifies a legal entity: a company, an association, a foundation, an investment fund, a public body. Each entity has a single LEI, used by every bank, broker and regulator, in any country.
The system is coordinated by GLEIF, a not-for-profit foundation overseen by a committee of public authorities from around the world. The codes are assigned by issuers it accredits, the LOUs (Local Operating Units). All the data sits in a free, public index.
Legal name, registered address, legal form, registration number and status. Confirmed against the business register and revalidated at every renewal.
The direct parent and the ultimate parent, when the company consolidates accounts within a group, or the reason for not stating them. Shareholders who are natural persons do not appear.
Checks the check digits, without leaving this page.
The LEI is the same in Lisbon, Frankfurt or New York. A German bank, a US broker or a European regulator identify your company by the same number, with no translations or certificates.

The LEI is required in specific financial and regulatory contexts. If your company is in one of these cases, the bank, broker or regulator will ask for it, and without it the transaction stops.

A currency forward, an interest rate swap or an option taken out with the bank is reported with the LEI of both parties. Exporters and importers who lock in exchange rates are in this group.
Companies with shares or bonds registered at Euronext Securities Porto, the former Interbolsa, investment funds and anyone doing repurchase or securities lending transactions.
Insurers and reinsurers, management companies and pension funds, and insurance intermediaries working in other EU Member States must have a LEI.
Banks, insurers and other financial entities identify their ICT service providers in the DORA register of information, by LEI or EUID. If you work for the sector, you will probably be asked for it.
A bank opening an account, an investor, an auditor or a foreign customer may ask for the LEI to identify the company unambiguously. ISO 20022 payment messages already have a dedicated field for it.
The result appears here, with the reason for each case.
A LEI must be renewed every year. With a multi-year plan you pay less per year, and the renewals are on us until the end of the period.
For those who need it now and prefer to decide year by year.
Next renewal: €59.

For those who trade or report regularly and do not want to think about it again.

Already have a LEI with another provider? We move its management to Sooma at no cost, and the number does not change. If it has lapsed or is close to its date, it is renewed in the same request, at the normal price.
A lapsed LEI is recovered with a normal renewal, at the price of the plan you choose. The number stays the same and returns to active status.
Groups, fund management companies and accountants with several entities: centralised management, aligned renewal dates, a single invoice and volume pricing.
Prices in euros, excluding VAT at 23% (Portuguese VAT applies to customers in Portugal). They include the GLEIF annual fee and the issuer’s cost. No activation or Level 2 charges.
A lapsed LEI still exists, but it signals that the data is no longer being confirmed. Many intermediaries and reports only accept an active LEI: a lapsed one stops the order or the report on the day it is needed.

Enter the tax number, the type of request and the period. If the entity already has a LEI, the form tells you and switches the request to a renewal or transfer.
3 minutesWe confirm the data against the business register and send the invoice. If the person requesting is not a director, we also send the authorisation template.
by the next business dayThe accredited issuer validates the data and assigns the LEI, which is published in the global index. You receive the number and the certificate by email.
usually 1 business dayWe remind you before the date. You confirm the data is unchanged and the LEI stays active. On the 3 and 5-year plans, renewals are paid for and handled.
once a yearSooma does not issue LEIs. Issuance, renewal and transfer are always carried out by an issuer accredited by GLEIF, a Local Operating Unit (LOU), that we work with.
Sooma handles the request, prepares and confirms the data, follows the validation, keeps track of the dates and manages the renewals. You deal with us from start to finish.
LEI.PT is a service of Sooma.com Web Services, a European email and hosting provider based in Portugal, and part of DigitalTrust, Sooma’s certification and cybersecurity unit. Validating identities, keeping data accurate and not letting things lapse that must stay active is what we already do every day with email certificates.

No. In Portugal every company has a NIF (tax number); a LEI is only mandatory in specific financial and regulatory contexts: trading financial instruments, taking out derivatives, having securities registered with a central securities depository, insurance and pension fund activity, or when a bank, regulator or customer asks for it. Use the test above to see if this applies to you.
Usually one business day after payment and data are confirmed. It can take longer when the name or address in the request does not match the business register, when the requester’s authorisation is missing, or for funds and foreign entities, which require additional documents. If you have a deadline, tell us in your request.
The number is permanent; the registration must be renewed every year, confirming that the data is unchanged. On the 3 and 5-year plans, the annual renewals for that period are already paid for and we handle them: we only ask you to confirm the data.
The LEI moves to “lapsed” status (LAPSED). The number still exists and still appears in the global index, but it signals that the data has not been confirmed. Many intermediaries and regulatory reports require an active LEI, and a lapsed one can stop an order or a report. It is recovered with a normal renewal, with no surcharge.
Yes, at no cost. It is called a transfer: management of the LEI moves to the issuer we work with and the number does not change. The process follows GLEIF rules, which give the current issuer the chance to confirm the request, and usually takes a few business days. If the LEI has lapsed or is close to its date, it is renewed in the same request, at the plan price.
No. Each legal entity has a single LEI, used by every bank, broker and regulator. If you find your company has two, one of them must be annulled as a duplicate; we take care of that. Branches in other countries may have their own LEI, linked to the head office’s.
Yes, when they carry on a registered business activity and need a LEI for it, for example to trade financial instruments in the course of that activity. Natural persons without a business activity do not have a LEI. We confirm each case before going ahead.
Level 2 says who owns whom: the direct parent and the ultimate parent, when the company consolidates accounts within a group. You must state those relationships or the reason for not stating them, for example because the shareholders are natural persons, who never appear in the LEI. We prepare this with you and charge nothing extra for it.
Yes. The GLEIF global index is public, free and open to use: anyone can look up the name, address, status and group relationships of any LEI, as you can with the search on this page. It contains no personal data of directors or shareholders.
No. The number stays the same and the data is updated, which we do at no cost during the validity period. In a merger, the absorbed company stops using its LEI, which is marked as merged and linked to the LEI of the company that absorbed it.
Each fund, sub-fund or company has its own LEI. From 10 entities we make a proposal with volume pricing, a single invoice, aligned renewal dates and a report on the status of every LEI. Enter the number in your request.
No. Sooma acts as a registration agent. Issuance, renewal and transfer are always carried out by an issuer accredited by GLEIF (LOU), which validates the data and publishes the record in the global index. On your side, everything goes through Sooma: the request, the invoice, the support and the renewals.
Once the data is confirmed, we send Sooma’s invoice, with Portuguese VAT details. The request goes to the issuer once payment is confirmed. If, for any reason, the LEI cannot be issued, we refund the amount paid.
We reply by the next business day at the latest, with the data confirmed, the invoice and, if needed, the authorisation template. If you are not sure which request to make, choose “Not sure” and we will tell you.
